113th Annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count Begins Tomorrow!

113th Annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count Begins Tomorrow!

Friday, December 14th, 2012 is a Very Special Day.  Rising before the crack of dawn, folks throughout North and South America, and in the Carribean, will be packing their lunches, binoculars, field guides and cameras and heading out to local woods and parks to count birds.

The Audubon Christmas Bird Count is the longest running citizen science survey in the entire world!
Great Blue Heron - Christmas Bird Count
With encroaching civilization, habitat loss is at an all-time high.

When I was young, the birds singing outside in the trees were so loud, I would often wake at the crack of dawn.

Now, even in northern Ontario at the cottage, in the middle of the forest, mornings are often silent.

                                     Where have the birds gone?

The Audubon Christmas Bird Count monitors bird numbers and type across the Americas, giving much needed data which scientists use to study bird population trends.

Last year a record was set with 2,248 Christmas Bird Count Circles (areas across North and South America where the bird count is done).

To participate in the Christmas Bird Count, join a circle in your area. Check here to find circles in your area and to find out which day the count is taking place.

The Audubon Christmas Bird Count takes place from December 14th, 2012 to January 5th, 2013.

There is no cost to join.

If you are unable to take part, please consider making a donation to the Audubon Society to help in this annual study.

This Christmas season, please consider our feathered friends and take part in the 113th Annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count!
