Habitat for Humanity Expands to Oakville - Building Two Homes This Year

Habitat Halton, the Habitat for Humanity chapter in Halton region, will be building homes in Oakville for the first time starting in May of 2010.

The homes will be built on Elmwood Road with construction set to run from May to October. The two families have already been selected and will be contributing 500 hours each of work hours during the building process.

Oakville is one of the most affluent cities in Canada, however 9.7% of residents live below the poverty line.

Lack of affordable housing in Oakville forces many residents to become homeless or to move in with relatives and friends.

Habitat for Humanity, a volunteer organization which began 25 years ago, endeavours to help those families who live below the poverty line and are unable to afford a home of their own.

Habitat Halton does not restrict itself to single family dwellings. The organization recently purchased 3.3 acres in Burlington where it will be building up to 250 condos and townhouses for low and middle income families in the region.

Habitat Halton is always glad to welcome new volunteers to the program. Those who are interested should contact Habitat for Humanity Halton at 905-637-4446 or visit the Habitat Halton website.
