Lacrosse in Oakville - A Game Older Than Canada.

Lacrosse in Oakville - A Game Older Than Canada.

Lacrosse is one of the oldest team sports still being played in the world today.

It originated with the native tribes of the north american continent and was one of the main attractions at pow-wows when tribes from all over would gather to partake in food, fellowship and festivities.

Strong, agile native men and boys learned to be skilled lacrosse players from the time they were little tykes.

It is believed that lacrosse originated in the 12th century amongst the Iroquois and Huron tribes.
1000s of men would play lacrosse on fields miles long and a game could go on for days.

It was known as the 'creator's game' and had a deep spiritual component in which warriors prepared themselves for war and each player was very proud to be representing their clan.

Lacrosse was also played to heal the sick and to resolve conflicts.

Hi Jo...great history recall, we all played lacrosse when we were young, still a very popular sport.

Jo,

It's an interesting and extemely fast game. It is played best by athletes who are good at both hockey and baseball.

I know a number of professional lacrosse players. It's too bad that at the moment, it is a short season, and they all need other jobs to return to after the season.

Jo...Lacrosse is the fastest growing youth sport in Colorado. Both of my sons and my daughter play, and we love watching the action. I even coached for a few years. Wish we had the sport in CA when I was growing up, would have preferred it over baseball.

Fred,

I didn't realize that the men of your generation had played lacrosse too....I know my Dad played hockey. I'm not even sure if lacrosse was available for him to play.

When my sons were young they could have played lacrosse...my youngest played for one season but preferred hockey and rugby and baseball so dropped out of lacrosse.

Jo,

Oakville is a hotbed of activity when it comes to lacrosse. The Toronto Rock which play out of the ACC are Toronto's professional team.

There are several players from Oakville who are among the best in the league.
