Olympics Starting in Vancouver, BC, Canada Now!

Sitting here in bed with my laptop while I wait for the opening of the Winter Olympics in Vancouver, BC.

GO CANADA GO!!!!!

Everywhere I went today the olympic frenzy was heating with up with red olympic sweaters and mittens being sold by the hundreds, and likely by the thousands across our great country.

Winter and Canada go hand in hand. Heck, many of us grew up learning how to skate and ski when we had barely mastered the art of walking.

I remember my youngest son Rob, learning to skate when he was barely 2 yrs old. He refused to let anyone hold his hand and help him on the ice. Instead he wanted to master it on his own.
He would take a few steps on his skates, fall down and get right back up again and take a few more. I watched from a few feet away and it was all I could do not to try and help him.
If I dared try, he would shake my hand loose and scream 'no, I don't want any help!'.  The very first time he was on skates he had taught himself how to skate within a few hours. It was the same when it came to snowboarding.

This is the spirit that champions are made of. Sheer determination to master a sport no matter what.

Tonight, as the olympics are about to begin, I wish for all of the athletes, from the world over, the very best performance they have ever given. Stay safe and have fun.

I wish you all could win gold medals.

Congratulations Jo-Anne and all of Canada.

I am watching the opening ceremonies and they are stunning.

Jo-Anne I'm watching as I'm writing.  I just saw the Georgia team go by and they looked so sad. What a tragedy! I was hearing earlier only the 4th time in Olympic history.  I'm glad they went ahead and walked and are going to participate.

By the way what a beautiful opening ceremony.  We went to Whistler a few summers ago and our daughter became enthralled with their artwork.  I instant messaged to see if she was watching and she was.

Congratulations to Canda for what looks like a spectacular event - and Like Marchel I just saw the Georgian delegation go by - what a tragedy indeed, so painful to watch them. and only 8 in the delegation to start.

Marchel,

It's a tragedy beyond comprehension....so young and filled with so much hope.  I've always thought the luge was dangerous and often wondered why there weren't more accidents. My heart goes out to his family and country.

Thanks for your post.. Nice to have everyone see our city.. opening ceremony was great.  Flags at half mast, very appropriate..

Jo-anne it was an excellent but what was so cool and so very Canadian was the unannounced journey by Wayne Gretzky taking the torch outside and traveling on the back of a pickup truck to light the cauldron outside the international media centre.

By the way the announcers kept referring to the cauldron as being at False Creek. The location is on Burrard inlet.

Jo, we will all have to stop blogging to watch. Setting some time aside today to enjoy. I'll be thinking of you and Liz Moraz as we enjoy all the sights and events! I missed the opening events! Came home so tired and laid down to rest thinking to get up. Never made it back up! I agree that they should all win gold medals just for getting to be there and compete! Let the Games Begin!

Jo-Anne I thought about you last night as I was watching the ceremony.

I always think of my Activerain family when I hear news that is about their city.

So tell me are you going to attend any of the events?

Hi Jo, My heart too, goes out to the family and team mates of the young man from Georgia. What a horrifying thing to have happened. I wondered about the flag when they raised it at the opening ceremonies, if they would fly it at half mast. Glad they are, it is appropriate.

I wish all the atheletes safety, and the very best in their competition!

I was so impressed with the opening ceremonies JO - I thought of you immediately - the poetry and dance and theatre and art of it all (the effects were breathtaking).  Oh Canada - you should be so proud :)

Sincerely,

Grace

Lise,

It's a very sad beginning to the Olympics. The luge now has such a shadow cast over it and I think everyone is leary of it a bit now....even though they've but up some barriers of some kind to make it safer.

Hi Missy,

Thanks for thinking of me, but I live in Ontario, a 4 1/2 hour plane ride away from the Olympics in BC so I won't be able to attend any of the events except on TV!

Joe - Barrie and I watched the opening ceremonies last night ... what a treat. There were some wonderful performances by some great artists.  There will be some sad memories for many as a result of the accident.

Jo,

Cool!  Isn't the Olympics an amazing testament to the human spirit!  It starts out young, as Rob showed you.  It happens each and every day, even when there are not medals being given out.

Thanks for sharing the excitement.

All the best, Michelle

Goodness, Jo, I am out of the Rain for a few days and miss your wonderful Gold Star!  I have been watching the Olympics and was sure you were enjoying them.  I, too, am glad they made the luge safer--it was a tragic beginning but the Opening Ceremonies were spectacular as well as the events I was able to see.

BTW, thanks for the "check up" call--you're so sweet!
