GAME ON!! Go Canada Go!

Just arrived home from the National Home Show in Toronto and after taking care of some business, have settled in to watch the gold medal hockey game between Canada and the USA.

Hockey is a very emotional game for Canadians. It's our national sport and children grow up here with hockey in their blood.
I grew up in a hockey family. My Dad played hockey from the time he was a little kid, both of my brothers played hockey from the time they first learned how to skate and my Mom played hockey when she was a teenager on a girl's hockey team in northern Ontario.
All 3 of my sons played hockey from the time they were little and I have so many memories of cheering both them and my brothers on from cold hockey stands in rinks across Ontario and the northern USA.

The games I attended were always filled with emotion; mostly amongst the fans. On more occasions than once I've seen overly exhuberant hockey fans threaten other fans or attempt to draw them into a physical fight. That's what hockey sometimes brings out in people.

I once had to defend my Mom, who was in her early sixties at the time, against a woman who wanted to meet my Mother outside the rink and have it out with her. I believe she meant in a fist fight. All this just because my Mother is often one of the loudest and most enthusiastic fans at hockey games. When it's her sons or grandsons playing, she's a one woman force with her loud cheers.

Another time a man wanted to take me on at a game, all because I was shocked at how a member of his son's hockey team treated a member of my son's hockey team during a game. The boy had grabbed our player and pulled his helmet off and proceeded to try and smash his head into the ice over and over. Needless to say I was shocked at such violence and voiced my opinion about it, while the aggressive hockey player's parents cheered his actions on.  Yes, this is what hockey was degenerating to not that many years ago.

In recent years hockey has been cleaned up some and violent acts are not tolerated as much. The fans, I believe, are getting a better grip on themselves and games are becoming more civil, or at least not degenerating into violence and fights amongst the fans.

Ok, back to the game. Canada just scored their second goal in the game bringing it to 2-0 for Canada. YEEEAHHHHHH!  Go Canada GO!

I understand your exuberation, being married to a Canadian turned American.  I asked him who he was rooting for and he just shrugged his shoulders!  It's not looking good for Team USA right now!

It was a wonderful game and the outcome was certainly never a sure thing. Just a side note - technically Lacrosse is our National Sport (I know - go figure!)

Rick,

I know lacrosse is the oldest sport continuously played in Canada.....I guess we have two!
