For excellent maple syrup baked beans, vegetarian style, here is my Dad's 'secret' recipe.
Shhhh, don't tell him I've printed it here. ((-;
Cover beans (Great Northern white beans) in water to 1inch above - let stand overnight.
Using same water, boil and reduce to simmer for 1 hr. Drain water and save.
Put in baking dish:
beans, onion, 1/2 cup maple syrup, 1/3 cup chili sauce, 2tbsps molasses, 2 tsp dry mustard (or regular), add cooking liquid to cover.
Stir and bake at 300 deg for 3 hours.
Stir occasionally and add liquid to keep covered.
Uncover and top with cut up apple sections and sprinkle with brown sugar. Cover and bake for 1 hour longer.
Delicious!!
Bronte Creek Provincial Park Maple Syrup Festival is an outing the whole family is sure to enjoy.

Maple syrup, is there anything on this planet tastier than that Jo? I'm going to give your dad's recipe a whirl. I feel adventurous tonight, and I have never actually made anything using maple syrup before.
Malcolm,
Let me know how your beans turn out....my Dad reads my blog so he'll be honoured that you're trying out his recipe. We had them just a few nights ago when we were in Belleville visiting and they were even more delicious than I remember them!
Jo
I can't eat waffles or pancakes without maple syrup! Thanks for sharing the family secret recipe, too.
Jo
Sounds like a great family outing and a chance to see Mother Nature at work!
Ty
Jo,
That sounds like a blast. We do LOVE Canadian Pure Maple Syrup. I have a great bread recipe posted somewhere on AR that has maple syrup as it's best ingredient.
Now, you have me thinking of pulling out the bread machine.
All the best, Michelle
Jo, I won't say a word to your dad but you're sure making me want some pancakes right now....smothered in that :) Wow, I haven't had home made Maple Syrup since I was a child...
I would LOVE going to this! My taste buds would be in heaven!
Debi
Oh, yum! You are reminding me of my childhood in Oakville although at that time, the closest sugar bush was in Milton. It was a wonderful annual ritual filled with memories. The Bronte Creek Park didn't exist back then but I've seen it since and it is a treasure in your community. Hope YOU get out and enjoy some yum.
Jo,
I'll tell you a little secret. I'm known for my chocolate milkshakes. And, maple syrup is the secret ingredient.
Once you think you have added enough, put in twice the amount!
Brian
Jo - Your father's recipe looks very tasty just reading it.
Brian - I'll need to try your chocolate milkshake one day.
Li,
Somehow the maple 'flavoured' syrup just doesn't cut it.....
Jo
Ty,
Children love visiting the sugar bush...I still have memories from my visits as a child.
Jo
Michelle,
Sounds like a great recipe...I wonder if I could adapt it to make it gluten-free?
Jo
Carole,
Has Laura ever had some? Perhaps you should get some and share a pancake breakfast together....
Jo
Debi,
The photo op would be great too....
Jo
Marg,
Have you been here lately? You might not recognize Oakville anymore...it's changing so quickly.
Jo
Brian,
Thanks for sharing your 'secret' ingredient! I'll remember that next time I'm making milkshakes or smoothies...
Jo
Marc,
If you like baked beans, you should try it.
Jo
